The penultimate sentence of the legend to Fig. 1(b) should read:
Plates were inoculated at the centre of the plate, as described in Methods, and were incubated until migration reached 2.5 cm; this was approximately 12 and 4 h for left and right panels, respectively.
2. Methods section Synergy, complementation and mixed swarm experiments with B-medium (p. 401)
In preparing inocula for swarming on B-medium, precultures for the thr+ strains were grown in B-medium at 37°C, and for the thr auxotroph (thrC::sfp+) B-medium was supplemented with 1 mM threonine. When testing for all swarming mutants, the isogenic parental strain was run in parallel. Regrettably, this information was omitted in writing the manuscript but does not affect the results or conclusions drawn in the original article.
The authors and editors apologise for any confusion these errors may have caused.
