A re-examination of the identity of the alphaproteobacterial tetrad-forming organisms (TFO) has shown they do not represent members of the genus Sphingomonas, as proposed in the above paper. The 16S rRNA clone sequence from this population used to identify putative glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAO) in an activated sludge community is a complex chimaera resulting from at least three template sources. Thus the SBR9-1a and SBR9-1b FISH probes designed against this chimaeric sequence should not be used. Consequently we wish to retract this paper. The second author did not contribute to these experimental outcomes, and so the responsibility for them resides with Beer and Seviour.
