In recent years, Microbiology has received an increased number of submissions and the number of pages published each year has grown, despite the application of more stringent acceptability criteria. The average length of published papers has also increased. To encourage authors to be concise, the Editorial Board has decided to implement a policy of charging authors a fee to publish papers that contain more than 4500 words (including the figure and table legends and any appendices, but not the abstract or references) or more than 8 figures and tables combined. The charge will be assessed on the accepted manuscript and will be £75 per 500 words or part thereof over 4500 and £75 per figure or table over 8. The charge will come into effect for papers submitted on or after 1 October 2006.
This fee covers only a small fraction of the cost of publishing this additional material; it is intended to encourage authors to consider carefully whether all the material in their paper is necessary.
Papers will continue to incur no colour charges in cases where the use of colour is judged to be necessary for scientific reasons, and no charges are levied on online-only supplementary material.
As of 12 July 2006, Microbiology has moved to a new online submission system, the Bench>Press system from HighWire Press. As well as offering greater flexibility and functionality to editors and reviewers, the new system allows authors to submit their manuscripts as separate word-processor and image files as an alternative to a single PDF file, in addition to other improvements such as the ability to save a submission part way through.
From 12 July, authors can no longer submit new papers to the ESPERE system and will instead be redirected to the Bench>Press page.
Authors of papers submitted before 12 July will be able to submit revised manuscripts or other additional files to the ESPERE system. Papers already under review or under revision will not be moved to the new system.
Everyone who is registered as a user with the ESPERE system will also be set up as a user on the Bench>Press system; when you first visit the new site, you will need to create a new account to choose a password and verify that your email address is correct. Registered users of other journals that use the Bench>Press system will not need to re-register to use the Microbiology site.
